Graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and staff are all welcomed members on our steering committee. Becoming a steering committee member means that:
  • You are on the front line for advocating for diversity at OHSU.
  • You are building a transferable skill-set applicable to your career development.
  • You will participate in monthly steering committee meetings.

We understand that we are all students, post-docs, faculty, and staff first. We actively try to reduce the time commitment of any person and streamline our involvement process.

Structure Overview

AVDS's board and committee structure is pictured below. The board positions are currently occupied and require at least 1 year involvement with AVDS.

We have six committees to get involved with:
  • Communications - Help us get the word out about AVDS!
  • Events - Organize our social events to build community!
  • Education - Help organize educational events, such as documentary showings, invited speakers, and tabling at graduate program recruitment!
  • Operations - Network with other organizations, collect data, and help AVDS grow!
  • Policy - Help evaluate OHSU departmental and programmatic policies that affect the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority students.

Each committee has sub-committee coordinators, which are event/activity-based and designated by the chairperson. For example, our Recruitment Coordinator (part of the Education committee) organizes AVDS tabling during graduate program recruitment season. Committee members participate in multiple events and activities, organized by the sub-committee coordinators.

If there is an event or activity that you would like AVDS to host, please send your suggestion to the AVDS email and we will link you up with the corresponding chairperson! This is your chance to design and run an event with AVDS support!
