The purpose of the AVDS Elevate Award is to recognize an individual who has catalyzed positive change in cultivating a more equitable and inclusive environment within the research community. The awardee receives a sum of $1,000 along with a certificate. The 2021 award was jointly funded by the Behavioral Neuroscience Department and the Vollum Institute.
We are grateful to everyone who submitted nominations for our 2nd annual Elevate Award and to all who were nominated for the work that they do. We had 20 nominations for 11 different individuals.

2021 Winner!
The AVDS Board is excited to announce that AJ Mitchell is the 2021’s Elevate Award winner!
AJ is a graduate researcher in the Behavioral Neuroscience Department where he serves as on the departmental diversity committee. In his work on this committee he was integral to numerous projects including: designing a term long anti-racism course, providing feedback on the SoM diversity action plan, and submitting a successful proposal for the Racial Equity and Inclusion funding opportunity this past fall. In addition to this work, AJ serves as the Chair of Operations for AVDS where he has created new systems to streamline and track the progress AVDS has made. He is a valued member of all the communities he is a part of and the AVDS Elevate Committee is incredibly excited to present him with this award. Congratulations AJ!
