Beauty in Breaking by Michele Harper - Chapter 5
Jan 20, 2022
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr Day we will be discussing the life and work of renowned Black author Octavia E. Butler. She was the first Science Fiction writer to win the McArthur Genius Award, and the first Black author to win the Hugo award in science fiction. She is credited with shaping  Afro-futurism to neo-slave genres, and she defines her protagonists as “Black and female, behave as though they have no limitations.” We will discuss how she used literature and stories to both process the reality she saw, and help her reader imagine a different future. For this book club, we will discuss the NPR Throughline episode that analyzes her work and we also invite you to read or listen to one of her short stories.
